Kay Coles James Secretary James serves as President, Chairwoman, and the Founder of the Gloucester Institute, a non-profit that provides professional and leadership training for African-American college students and prepares them to be the next generation of our nation’s leaders. She served as Governor Glenn Youngkin’s Secretary of the Commonwealth and chaired his Transition Committee. A committed public servant, Secretary James has served in administrations of President George W. Bush, President George H. W. Bush, and as Secretary of Health and Human Resources under Governor George Allen.
Secretary James has served as President of a premier national think tank, a member of the PNC Financial Services Group, and Dean of the Robertson School of Government at Regent University.
A lifelong Virginian, Secretary James earned her bachelor’s degree from Hampton University and lives in Richmond with her husband of 50 years, Charles. She is the proud mother of three adult children and grandmother of five, including a current Duke!
