Duties:

The part-time, Seasonal Groundskeeper/Maintenance Assistant will assist with general upkeep and maintenance of our property and facilities. This role works closely with the Maintenance Technician to support day-to-day maintenance needs, grounds care, and light facility projects. The Seasonal Groundskeeper/Maintenance Assistant helps ensure a safe, functional, and welcoming environment for staff, volunteers, visitors, and animals through routine upkeep, seasonal projects, and collaborative problem-solving.

  • Clear leaves, weeds, and debris from around the building, parking lot, enclosures, and perimeter fence on a regular basis.
  • Regularly monitor the perimeter fence and repair damage as needed to ensure permit compliance.
  • Perform basic repairs of enclosures, including fixing perches, patching holes, replacing nails, replacing door latches, etc.
  • Use hand tools and basic power tools safely and effectively for small projects.
  • Help maintain clean and organized maintenance and storage areas.
  • Safely use ladders and perform tasks at heights, including occasional work on rooftops (clearing debris from animal enclosures).
  • Assist the Maintenance Technician with special projects, repairs, etc.
  • Other duties, responsibilities, and special projects, as requested.

Requirements:

  • Commitment to wildlife, conservation, and the environment.
  • Professional appearance and demeanor.
  • Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and adhere to established procedures.
  • Ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to lift/carry up to 60 pounds.

The Wildlife Center of Virginia is an internationally acclaimed teaching and research hospital for wildlife and conservation medicine, located in Waynesboro, Virginia, in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley. The Center’s mission is to “teach the world to care about and care for wildlife and the environment.” Since its founding in 1982, the Center has cared for more than 100,000 wild animals, representing 200 species of native birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians. The current annual caseload averages about 4,300 patients. The Wildlife Center has a professional staff of about 30 individuals who work together in the veterinary, outreach, operations, and advancement departments. While each of these departments carries out different functions, all staff work closely together as a team to support one another and the Center’s overall mission.

Specific hours
This part-time, seasonal position runs from early May through September 2026. The preferred schedule is four 5-hour days per week, capped at 20 hours per week. The schedule is flexible for the right candidate. Weekend and holiday work is required.
