Purpose

To recognize an early career, tenure-track faculty member who has demonstrated significant achievement in research, scholarship and/or creative work.

Inclusive excellence in faculty research, scholarship and creative work prepares a diverse student population and inspires innovation. In order to integrate scholarship, service and teaching to enhance student learning and provide a challenging and supportive environment with a heightened sense of intellectual stimulation, the Provost Award for Excellence in Research and Scholarship recognizes innovative and sustained activities in scholarly pursuits across academic disciplines. Recipients of the award provide JMU students with a stimulating environment that fosters learning and affirms the university as an intellectual and cultural leader.

*New for 2021-2022 – JMU colleges will follow the nomination process and submit a nomination packet for one pre-tenure faculty member per college.* 

Selection Process
  • Submit applications electronically to Benjamin Delp, Director of Research Development and Promotion by Monday, January 31, 2022.
  • All nominees will be notified of the status of their nomination by Friday, March 4, 2022.
  • Award winners will be honored at the Academic Affairs Awards Recognition Luncheon scheduled for Thursday, April 28, 2022 (if it is safe to gather), and receive a $1,000 honorarium.

Nomination Process

JMU colleges (College of Arts & Letters, College of Business, College of Education, College of Health & Behavioral Studies, College of Integrated Science & Engineering, College of Science & Mathematics, College of Visual & Performing Arts and the JMU Libraries) will each submit one nomination packet on behalf of the college. To be considered, nominees must be an early career, tenure-track faculty member, defined as a faculty member who has not yet received tenure. Self-nominations will not be accepted. College nominators are responsible for working with the nominee to assemble a packet with the following components:

  1. The nominee's CV
  2. A cover letter highlighting the scholarly activities of the nominee
  3. Two letters of support (letters from an entire academic unit count as one)

Selection Criteria

Candidates are evaluated for qualifications in any of the following areas:

  • Advancing the knowledge base of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) topics and/or demonstrating DEI responsiveness in the research, scholarship or creative work process
  • Scholarly achievements through peer-reviewed publications, conference papers, performances, exhibits and/or other scholarly and creative works
  • Impact on discipline at the state, regional, national and/or international levels
  • Engaging undergraduate and/or graduate students in applied creative work/scholarship and/or theoretical research activities
  • Implementing an interdisciplinary approach to research/creative work
  • Developing relationships with off-campus organizations (academia, government, industry, not-for-profit) and incorporating community engagement efforts into research and creative works
  • Facilitating inquiry into effective models and implementation of innovative teaching methods which advance the scholarship of teaching and learning
  • Serving and leading on unit, college, university, local, state, regional, national or international committees focused on scholarship and creative work
  • Serving as a reviewer for funding agencies, scholarly publications or other external academic organizations
  • Ability to secure internal and/or external sponsored project funding
