Pillar: A foundational element of the university’s strategic vision. A pillar is an aspirational statement describing JMU’s desired future state. A pillar may synthesize several related ideas into a broad theme, or it may be a stand-alone bold idea that, when accomplished, distinguishes JMU from the rest of higher education.
Guidepost Goal: Measurable, attainable, and aspirational statements that define long-term outcomes related to our mission. The guidepost goals may complement or overlap with success metrics associated with pillars.
Idea Forums: These 90-minute sessions are open to all faculty, staff, and students. Participants will be encouraged to share what they think makes JMU distinctive and the challenges we are poised to address.
College/Unit or Divisional Meetings: During his first semester, President Jim is attempting to meet with every college/unit and division to solicit ideas and familiarize himself with the distinct areas in JMU’s organization. These meetings are in addition to the Idea Forums. Members of each area will be notified of their specific time.
Presidential Tour: Coordinated through the Division of Philanthropy and Engagement, this tour offers the opportunity for President Jim to engage with alumni, parents, and community members throughout the Commonwealth (and country). The Presidential Listening Tour is different from college/unit/divisional meetings and the Idea Forums.
Board of Visitors (BOV): The governing body that oversees the mission, strategy, budgets, policies, and overall management of JMU.
BOV Strategic Planning Committee (SPC): A sub-committee of the full BOV. They provide guidance and oversight to JMU on the development and implementation of the strategic plan.
Vision Teams: Small committees consisting predominantly of faculty, staff, students, and administrators, who will be charged with crafting recommended strategies to help achieve the guidepost goals and pillars. An all-call for participation will occur later in the fall semester.
Implementation teams: Teams of JMU faculty, staff, and administrators, responsible for providing plans, timelines, resources, and metrics needed to achieve progress on the strategies. These teams will be formed in the spring.
