Substantive change is defined by SACSCOC as “a significant modification or expansion of the nature and scope of an accredited institution.”

For some changes, SACSCOC must be notified in advance of implementation. Others, like significant changes to a program’s curriculum, require that SACSCOC review and approve a proposal/prospectus many months in advance of the change being made.

JMU’s policy regarding substantive change is part of the university Manual of Policies and Procedures. Policy 2102 explains the university’s process for preparing a submission to SACSCOC. Curriculum changes are monitored for possible substantive change through the Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty, Curriculum and Policy.

If you are aware of a modification that could be a substantive change, please contact Chris Orem for assistance in determining any required reporting.

For more on the SACSCOC policy refer to the SACSCOC Substantive Change website.
