Equity and Inclusion Statement

Our world is not the ideal place we want it to be. As recent events have shown, the ideals promised and the values espoused at the founding of this nation remain yet unreached and rampant racism continue unchecked. The Student Leadership Center at James Madison University stands with those who raise their voices to protest injustice and inequality, but we do not align with those who raise violence in response to the violence that has been unjustly done.

We recognize the need for a more equitable society, one that fulfills the promise of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for all. We know that declarations on paper, or words on a screen, are inadequate by themselves. It is action, work, and effort that is needed to identify and dismantle systems of privilege and institutions of discrimination. It is strength, courage, and a will to develop new ways of governing, new ways of living, and certainly new ways of leading.

The Student Leadership Center offers our commitment to stand with the students of James Madison University who raise their voices for equity, inclusion, and respect. We commit to lift up and support student leaders who act boldly to influence change that will ensure a better future for all. We commit to sustain those who do not sit on the sidelines and wait for others to lead.

We commit to connect, to influence, to lead.

Sincerely, Michael McCleve Student Leadership Center
