Supporting Student Veterans

Veterans Affairs’  Campus Toolkit provides faculty, staff, and administrators resources to support student Veterans. The aim of the toolkit is to help campuses welcome these student veterans by recognizing who they are, and understanding their unique experiences, adjustments, and needs. Faculty resources include how to make your syllabus Veteran friendly, and how to understand and help with specific classroom behaviors.  The toolkit provides resource links for managing distress, getting help, understanding PTSD, and understanding benefits.

Understanding PTSD

VA's National Center for PTSD is dedicated to research and education on trauma and PTSD. This website contains information for the public and professionals, research, and links for where to get help for PTSD.

PTSD for Professionals: This link contains training materials as well as information and tools to help health care professionals with assessment and treatment of PTSD. These materials are based on the latest research, much of which is conducted by National Center for PTSD staff.

Accommodating Student Veterans with Traumatic Brain Injury and Post-traumatic Stress Disorder: Tips for Campus Faculty and Staff  The American Council on Education (ACE) offers tips in a 2010 report for faculty and staff who may be working with students suffering from "invisible injuries" like traumatic brain injury (TBI) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Hiring Veterans

VA’s Veterans Employment Toolkit helps employers, managers and supervisors, human resource professionals, and employee assistance program (EAP) providers relate to and support their employees who are Veterans and members of the Reserve and National Guard. In this toolkit, you can learn about Veterans and the military, such as what Veterans bring to the workplace and what the military structure and culture is like. You can also learn how to support employees who are Veterans or members of the Reserve or National Guard in the workplace, through reading about common challenges and how to help, reviewing communication tips, reading a report about Veterans in the workplace, or by downloading handouts to use with EAP clients.

The Virginia Values Veterans (V3) Program is a Virginia Department of Veterans Services program that helps employers understand, design, and implement nationally recognized best practices in recruiting, hiring, and retaining Veterans.
