Audition Procedures

Please note that this semester there will be no required aria for the audition.

Required work: Ubi Caritas III from Sacred Heart by Ola Gjeilo; rehearsal D to the end (starting on page 10) . See below for video links and downloadable audition files.

  1. Instructions
    • Please use the practice tracks if desired found in FILES on the Voice Area Canvas class! If you are NOT a current music major, please email Dr. Jo-Anne van der Vat-Chromy ( vanderjx@jmu.edu) for access to these files.
    • Please note that there will be no accompaniment at this audition, so you must know the piece in order to present it.
    • Where divisi, please prepare BOTH parts for your voice type!
    • Please learn solfege and then plan to sing on either solfege or text as you prefer.
  2. Key Centers
    • mm 41-49: Ab = do
    • mm 49-54: A = do (there are some altered syllables in here every once in a while)
    • mm 57 beat 4-end: E = do
  3. Sight-reading
    • Plan on bringing your tuning fork if you have one.

The Day of your Audition

Please arrive 15-20 minutes early to your audition to allow for intake paperwork, the sight-reading portion of the audition, and schedule shifts.

Please plan to:

  • Bring your tuning fork! You will use it during your audition!
  • Dress up! Look your best—an audition is always a practice for the next concert, solo, or audition. Your career is now—act the part and bring it!
  • Fill out an information form and give it to your door monitor when completed.
  • Present the required audition excerpt: Ola Gjeilo's Sacred Heart/Ubi Caritas III: Music pages 10-16: Rehearsal D to the end, following the instructions as given on the excerpt itself.
  • Sight-read exercise from an assigned selection.
