Gui Hwan Lee, PhD, is currently serving as Assistant Professor of Music Theory at James Madison University. As an interdisciplinary music theorist, Lee explores groundbreaking creativity in contemporary art music, film soundtracks, and East-Asian popular cultures. Lee has recently published an analysis of Liza Lim's How Forests Think (Context: Journal of Music Research, 2024), an analysis of Unsuk Chin's Gougalon (Music Theory Online, forthcoming in 2025), a soundtrack analysis of Princess Mononoke (Music Analysis, forthcoming), and a soundtrack analysis of Parasite (Music and the Moving Image, forthcoming in 2025). Lee's latest research topics include role playing game music and inclusive pedagogies for non-music students.

PhD in Critical Music Studies (2023) at Stony Brook University; MM in Musicology and MM Music Theory (2017) at the University of Cincinnati; BM in Violin Performance (2012) at Kyung Hee University. 

Gui Hwan is enthusiastic about various 'classics,' including (but not limited to) Hollywood classics, fantasy classics like The Lord of the Rings, anime classics like Studio Ghibli films, and video game classics like the Dark Souls series.
