If you have proficiency in a language offered at JMU, take the placement exam and follow the instructions. If you place into the 300-level with a score of 650 or better, you can take credit-by-exam to fulfill the BA language requirement. You may also waive the BA language requirement by demonstrating evidence of your proficiency level of Advanced Low through the ACTFL OPI, a Seal of Biliteracy exam, an AP score of 5, or a secondary school transcript from in which the target language was used for instruction. Check here for more information about credit by exam in Spanish.

If you have proficiency in a language not offered at JMU, you may waive the B.A. language requirement by taking the AVANT Stamp assessment (https://www.avantassessment.com/tests/stamp) and demonstrating proficiency at the Advanced Low level. You may also present other certifications of the Advanced Low proficiency level, such as the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview, a 5 on the AP exam, or an IB level of 6 or above.
