Fulfilling Your B.A. Language Requirement
If you place into the 300-level on the placement exam, you need to retake the exam in the Language Resource Center (Keezell 103) to confirm your placement. If you place into the 300-level again in the center, then your B.A. language requirement will be waived.
If you place into the 300-level with a score of 650 or better, you can take credit-by-exam for a 300-level course to receive credit for a course at that level, which can be counted for the major or minor. Check here for more information about credit by exam in Spanish.
To fulfill the B.A. language requirement, you may also demonstrate your proficiency at a level of Advanced Low through the ACTFL OPI, a Seal of Biliteracy exam at the level of Advanced Low, an AP score of 5, an IB level of 6 or above, or a secondary school transcript from a school in which the target language was used for instruction.
If you have proficiency in a language not offered at JMU, you may fulfill the B.A. language requirement through the above methods or by taking the AVANT Stamp assessment (https://www.avantassessment.com/tests/stamp) and demonstrating proficiency at the Advanced Low level. Please contact Dr. Cynthia Chalupa at chalupcs@jmu.edu with questions.
Transfer Credit:
You may transfer in college credit for approved courses that meet the requirements of 101-232.
Education in the target language:
Verify completion of two or more years of secondary education primarily taught in a language other than English (the school does not have to be outside the U.S.)
