ENG 294 FAQs

Students can take up to 3 credit hours of ENG 294 over the course of their academic career. For some students, this may look like a 2 credit internship followed by a 1 credit internship.

There are three separate sections of ENG 294:

  • ENG 294-0001 (1 credit) -- 40 total work hours (averaging about 3 hours per week)
  • ENG 294-0002 (2 credits) -- 80 total work hours (averaging about 6 hours per week)
  • ENG 294-0003 (3 credits) -- 140 total work hours (averaging about 10 hours per week)
*Please note: most students taking a full academic load will find a 3-credit internship difficult to complete in one semester; for intensive or long-term projects through an internship, consider a 1-credit internship followed by a 2-credit internship in successive semesters. Speak with the Director of Internships in English if you have any questions.

In addition to fulfilling the total number of required working hours, students will complete regular Weekly Reports; a Self Evaluation; and will create an Internship Overview Portfolio of their work at the conclusion of their internship. For a full explanation of requirements, please see ENG 294 requirements

  1. To apply for an internship or research assistantship, students must email the sponsoring supervisor
directly (see the English Department’s current internship position listings for contact information). Students should follow any procedures outlined in the position description or by the supervisor in order to apply.
  2. Students must be formally accepted by the supervisor for the position; this formal acceptance can take any written form (such as an acceptance email).
  3. If credit hours are not already determined, students and supervisors will discuss the position duties and will determine how many credit hours will be earned in the internship semester. See the credit-hours explanations below.
  4. Once a student has been accepted by the supervisor as an intern or research assistant, they must email the Director of Internships, CCing their supervisor, to request a permission number to enroll in the correct section of Eng 294 for 1, 2, or 3 credit hours. Students must communicate to the Director how many credits they intend to earn
  5. 5. Once the Director has confirmed the internship, they will send the student a permission number. Using the supplied permission number, students must register themselves for Eng 294 through MyMadison.
  6. Once the semester begins, student interns are responsible for their assigned internship tasks as well as for keeping track of and completing their academic requirements through Canvas. Visit the Canvas Eng 294 site for all details about Weekly Reports, the Self-Evaluation, the Employer Evaluation, the Portfolio, important deadlines, forms, and communication information

ENG 294 is offered in the fall, spring, or summer, but it is included in your regular semester tuition during the fall and spring only. Usually, students register for and complete the academic component of ENG 294 concurrently with their internship. However, summer interns may wish to register for and complete the academic components of ENG 294 during the fall immediately following their internship. Students who register for ENG 294 in the summer will be billed at the summer credit hour rate. Either way, you must apply for approval to enroll in ENG 294 before starting your internship.

CAP now offers scholarships of up to $5000 for JMU students working in an unpaid summer internship, on the condition that they are enrolled in ENG 294 or IDLS 486 concurrently with their internship (i.e. during the summer session).

Because of changing state and federal legislation, no student may complete an internship for academic credit in a state that is not a member of SARA.
