Sharlene Richards, Ph.D. (University of Oklahoma, 2005) has been teaching at James Madison University for the last seven years. She is now and Associate Professor and teaches in the Health Communication concentration. She is published in Health CommunicationJournal of Communication in HealthcarePrismThe American Journal of Hospice and Palliative Medicine, as well as other journals and books.

She teaches primarily in the health communication concentration but also teaches the basic communication course and SCOM 280 Research Methods. Her most recent research is focused on examining the communication of adult children of alcoholics; how their health beliefs and behaviors may differ from others  based on patterns of family communication while growing up with an alcoholic parent. Other areas of interest include family communication and the interpersonal aspects of health communication, including doctor-patient communication.
