Experience
Professor Woodruff is an Assistant Professor of Engineering at James Madison University whose teaching spans engineering mechanics, materials science, fluid mechanics, and first-year engineering design. He has extensive experience developing hands-on, project-based courses and mentoring student research in areas such as adaptive, curved-crease origami metamaterials, and engineering education. His research combines computational modeling, experimental testing, and interdisciplinary design to explore novel structural applications, particularly in origami-inspired engineering. Before joining academia full-time, Dr. Woodruff worked in industry as a junior staff engineer and GIS specialist in nondestructive testing, and as a structural engineering assistant and drafter.
Courses Taught
- ENGR 112 - Engineering Skills and Decisions
- ENGR 311 - Fluid Mechanics
- ENGR 314 - Materials and Intermediate Solid Mechanics
- ENGR 212 - Statics and Introductory Solid Mechanics
Research Interests
Professor Woodruff's research focuses on modeling and discovering the unique multi-physical behaviors of origami-inspired structures and mechanisms. He has developed a simulation tool for curved-crease origami validated by theories from classical mechanics and experimental tests. Using well-designed crease patterns, Professor Woodruff aims to leverage origami folding to solve problems in structural design and acoustic control.
