Experience
Giangiuseppe Pili is an Assistant Professor at the Intelligence Analysis Program, School of Integrated Sciences, James Madison University. Before joining JMU, he was a RUSI Associate Fellow and former Research Fellow in Open Source Intelligence and Analysis at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI, UK, London). He previously lectured in intelligence analysis for the International Master in Security, Intelligence and Strategic Studies (IMSISS) at Dublin City University (Ireland).
He holds a Ph.D. in Philosophy and Sciences of the Mind from Università Vita-Salute San Raffaele (Milan, Italy), where he defended a thesis on individual and social analytic epistemology. Among his publications, he authored a monograph on the philosophy of war (Filosofia pura della guerra) and a volume for the Italian Society of Military History based on his interview series Intelligence & Interview.
Dr. Pili conducts open-source intelligence projects with a focus on geospatial intelligence and has published OSINT reports for institutions such as the NATO Defense College, the U.S. Naval Institute, the Royal United Services Institute, the Digital Forensic Research Lab at the Atlantic Council, and European Security & Defense. He recently published for IEEE and he has been part of the selection board of MarCas (Maritime Communication and Security). His work has been featured in international media outlets, and he has been invited to present his research in multiple NATO countries.
Dr. Pili is a long-lasting chess player and helps JMU students in the JMU Chess Club.
