What organizations are you involved with in the CS department?

Being a TA for the first time my sophomore year was a huge game-changer for me. Not only did it provide the experience I needed to get my first internship, it gave me a better understanding of the material I was teaching.

What experiences have you had with summer internships?

I completed an internship in software development at Lowe’s HQ in Mooresville, NC during the summer of 2017. My time there was incredible, and I was lucky to work with an amazing team who cared a great deal about both my technical and professional development. The experiences I had there gave me the confidence in myself and in my skills that I have today. The biggest takeaway I had from my internship was learning to push myself into new challenges even if I felt uncomfortable because it allowed me to grow and stretch myself to levels of ability I never imagined possible.

What is your plan after you graduate?

In the next couple of years, I plan to start taking classes alongside my career to pursue my Master's degree!

What advice do you have for incoming students?

Relationships have been a huge contribution to my JMU experience. Our department revolves around collaboration as does the field of CS in general. Forming relationships with your peers, professors, and coworkers adds a new level to your education because you are able to push your learning even further by asking questions you may not feel comfortable asking without those relationships. Don’t be afraid to just stop by your professor’s office and ask to chat!
