Sharlene Richards, PhD who studied at University of Oklahoma, Ph.D, and George Mason University, M.A., is published in journals such as Health Communication, Journal of Communication in Healthcare, Prism, The American Journal of Hospice and Palliative Medicine. She teaches in the health communication concentration and also teaches GCOM and introduction to research methods. Her research has focused on cancer communication and social support as well as adult children of alcoholics.


Peter K Bsumek, PhD has areas of expertise include environmental communication, rhetoric & rhetorical theory, public argument & advocacy, and processes of debate and deliberation. His scholarship has been published in a variety of outlets including Environmental Communication: A Journal of Nature and Culture and Contemporary Argumentation and Debate. Dr. Bsumek is currently serving on the research team of an EPA funded grant investigating the effectiveness of “low cost” community based social marketing on the reduction of greenhouses gasses in university residence halls. Dr. Bsumek has provided communication and advocacy workshops, trainings and consultations for national, regional and local organizations such as the Sierra Club, The Virginia Wilderness Committee, The Friends of the North Fork of the Shenandoah River, and The Local Foods Working Group of the Shenandoah Valley.
