Academic Success Program (ASP)
Program Outline & Requirements
Fall 2025
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
The Academic Success Program (ASP) is a program intervention developed with the purpose of assisting JMU students in an academic suspension or probation status to become holistic and well-rounded student scholars. ASP’s mission is to help students identify their areas of greatest talent and assist them in determining how to apply those talents towards success in their academics. ASP accomplishes this mission by assisting students with academic strategies, professional skills, and personal motivational needs to be successful at JMU.
PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS:
- Review the Academic Success Program Screening Presentation (explaining ASP and its requirements), complete the Academic Success Program (ASP) Student Profile, and the Learning Assessment & Study Strategies Instrument (LASSI) first administration/pre-test
- Meet with your Peer Advisor at least three times during the semester, attend and actively participate in designated workshops, study halls, and visit at least two campus resources.
- At the first meeting, you and your Peer Advisor will work collaboratively to identify the workshops, campus resources, and study halls that will best support you and “create” an action plan. Meeting two will be a mid-semester “check-in” and the third and final meeting will be an end-of-the-semester “check-in”.
- You must complete the ASP requirements outlined in the action plan you created with your Peer Advisor. - Complete the Learning Assessment & Study Strategies Instrument (LASSI) second administration/post-test before the third/final meeting with your Peer Advisor. Bring the results to your final meeting and review with your Peer Advisor.
ACADEMIC HONESTY:
Upon enrollment, all students are subject to the provisions of the JMU Honor System. Each student has the responsibility to read and understand the honor code and procedures. All academic dishonesty is a violation of the Honor Code. Students shall observe complete honesty in all academic matters.
The JMU Honor Code is available from the Honor Council Website.
Action Plan:
In addition to meeting with your assigned Peer Advisor a minimum of three times during the semester, you will be required to attend two program workshops (topics this semester will include time management, study techniques, goal setting, campus engagement, and professional skills) and four study halls, and visit two campus resources.
Program Compliance:
The three categories of program compliance are as follows:
-
- Fully Met: Student completed all requirements within the action plan
- Met: Student completed most requirements within the action plan
- Partially Met: Student completed less than half of the requirements within the action plan
An end-of-semester compliance report will be shared with your academic college and/or Academic Student Services
Attendance Policy:
We recognize that extenuating circumstances could arise. However, with a personally tailored program intentionally planned to meet your individual needs, attendance is crucial to your experience.
- Workshops & Study Hall Schedule Conflicts: Workshop topics will be repeated throughout the semester, and study halls will be scheduled throughout the Fall 2025 semester (except during Fall Break, Thanksgiving, and final weeks), providing multiple opportunities to attend specific workshops or study halls.
- Meeting Conflicts: Students are required to meet with their Peer Advisor three times during the semester. If you need to reschedule, please do so directly with your Peer Advisor. We understand schedule changes happen, so please stay in contact with your Peer Advisor often and keep them informed on anything that alters your meetings together.
Inclement Weather Contingency:
The Academic Success Program will follow the guidelines and restrictions placed by JMU. The only instance where workshops, study halls, or meetings will not be held is if the university decides to close campus and cancel classes. The ASP Team will also be monitoring the weather and making decisions on the feasibility of holding in-person appointments. Students can anticipate the following to occur should meeting in person no longer be an option:
- Workshops: Workshops could be hosted virtually or canceled, and students will be notified via their @dukes.jmu.edu email with a Zoom link. The decision to cancel a workshop will be determined by the Peer Advisor and Program Coordinator, one of whom will notify the students via their @dukes.jmu.edu email to confirm what decision has been made. If the workshop is hosted virtually, the time will remain the same, and all registered students will be expected to attend.
- Study Halls: We will not host study halls virtually. The decision to cancel the study hall will be determined by the Peer Advisor and Program Coordinator, one of whom will notify the students via their @dukes.jmu.edu email to confirm what decision has been made.
- Meetings with Peer Advisors: Meeting times, dates, and locations are determined by the Peer Advisor and the student. They can maintain their meetings as planned or rescheduled. ASP strongly discourages in-person meetings from taking place when inclement weather impacts the safety of all in attendance.
- Campus Resources: Students should monitor their (@dukes.jmu.edu) email for any changes made by the campus resource/office regarding meeting/appointment rescheduling or cancellations.
Communication:
Communication regarding ASP will be sent to your student email (@dukes.jmu.edu), so please ensure it is fully operational and that you are checking it regularly. It serves as the primary form of communication for JMU students and all other departments and offices, so it is important to stay up to date with it. If you are having any trouble issues or are unable to access this email account, please inform your Peer Advisor immediately.
Cell Phones/Electronic Devices:
Please refrain from using your cell phones and/or other electronic devices during meetings, workshops, etc., unless otherwise instructed, out of respect for the Peer Advisors and so you can focus on the material.
