UREC Memberships

Use of University Recreation facilities (including the main UREC building, University Park, and all satellite facilities) and related programs is intended for the students, faculty, and staff of the JMU community. UREC and University Park are controlled access facilities.

Authorized users with full privileges include any full-time undergraduate or graduate student and full-time employees of the JMU community. Please see the list of memberships below for part-time, spouse, dependent, emeritus, alumni and other membership options. 

Full-Time JMU Undergraduate and Graduate Students

Full-time JMU undergraduate and graduate students are authorized users with facility access and program registration privileges at UREC and University Park (during operational hours). This includes family hour privileges.

  • Access for incoming full-time students begins when UREC opens for the Fall semester in late August.
  • Spring full-time students who are resuming full-time classes in the Fall maintain full-time access over the Summer. Students who paid the part-time access fee in the Spring and are resuming classes in the Fall will also maintain full-time access over the Summer.
  • Full-time students graduating in May will maintain facility access through the month of May, and full-time students graduating in December will maintain facility access through the month of December.
  • Full-time undergraduate students who graduate in May but will be taking full-time graduate classes the Fall maintain access through the summer, however this must be approved and processed by the Assistant Director for Member Services starting June 1.
Full-Time JMU Undergraduate and Graduate Student Spouse

Spouse Application

Spouse URAC (University Recreation Access Cards) cards are offered to spouses of full-time students for facility access and program registration privileges at UREC and University Park (during operational hours) without the company of their host. Once the application has been approved, the Host will be notified by email of approval and how the spouse may obtain the URAC Card. Please allow up to a week for processing. There is a one-time processing fee of $10 (paid to JMU Card Services) if the card is renewed each semester.

Full-Time JMU Undergraduate and Graduate Student Dependent

Dependent Application

Dependent URAC cards are offered to dependents of full time students for access during family hours, special break hours, such as Summer, Winter, and Spring Breaks; and give dependents (ages of 18-23) access to UREC and University Park without the company of their host. Once the application has been approved, the Host will be notified by email of approval and how the dependent will obtain the Dependent URAC Card. Please allow up to a week for processing. There is a one-time processing fee of $10 (paid to JMU Card Services) if the card is renewed each semester.

Part-Time JMU Undergraduate Students

Undergraduate part-time students may use the facility and related programs by paying a prorated fee.

Fall/Spring Semesters

Undergraduate students enrolled in 7 or more credit hours have the same access as “Full-Time JMU Undergraduate and Graduate Students” for the Fall or Spring semester. No additional fees are required.

  • 1-3 credit hours is a $100 user fee per semester.
  • 4-6 credit hours is a $50 user fee per semester.

Summer Semester

Undergraduate students will have the same access as “Full-Time JMU Undergraduate and Graduate Students” for the summer semester with no additional fees required if the student:

  • Is enrolled in 3 or more credit hours during the Summer.
  • Is enrolled in 7 or more credit hours the Spring semester before and the Fall semester after.

For students enrolled in 1-2 credit hours during the Summer and do not meet the above criteria, there is a $50 user fee for access.

Payment

You may pay this fee online (login with your JMU e-ID and password) with a credit card or at the UREC Welcome Center (FLEX payment only). 

In their final semester, students who are graduating from JMU may be eligible to have the part-time membership fee waived. To apply for the waiver, email urec@jmu.edu with your request and allow up to 3 business days for processing.

After payment or an approved waiver, part-time JMU undergraduate students are authorized users with facility access and program registration privileges at UREC and University Park (during operational hours). See the "Full-Time JMU Graduate and Undergraduate Students" tab for more information about your benefits once payment is completed.

Part-Time JMU Graduate Students

Part-time graduate students may use the facility and related programs by paying a prorated fee.

This membership permits the opportunity purchase a locker rental in the Faculty/Staff Locker Room; however, it does not include Athletic Training services.

Full-Time JMU Faculty/Staff and JMU Emeriti Spouse

Part-time (wage) and temporary contract employees will enjoy facility access and program registration privileges at UREC and University Park (during operational hours) and family hour privileges (during designated family hours only).

Summer Memberships for Temporarily Inactive Part-Time Faculty/Staff

These memberships are designed to provide access to JMU faculty and staff over the Summer when they may experience a gap in their employment contract. Once the application is submitted, the individual’s department head will be contacted to ensure that the employee's contract ended within the last year and the employee is expected to be on contract in the upcoming year. After submitting the application, the individual will be contacted by Assistant Director or GA for Members Services to complete the process by paying for the membership online.

JMU Affiliates

JMU Affiliates, in active status with the University, will enjoy facility access privileges at UREC and University Park (during operational hours). 

Affiliates may also enjoy family hour privileges during designated family hours only.

Affiliates will need a JACard and JMU e-ID in order to utilize UREC facilities and programs. The sponsoring department can choose to request this e-ID on the affiliate service form. 

Affiliate Memberships cannot be used for Spouse/Dependent Memberships or Athletic Training Services.

JMU Alumni

JMU Alums, just want to stop by and take a tour of UREC? No need to purchase a pass! Learn about touring UREC.

During Homecoming Weekend, all day Friday, all day Saturday, and Sunday until 6 p.m., JMU Alumni can participate at UREC and University Park for free. Alumni can bring their kids (15 and under) to participate at UREC 6 p.m. Friday through 6 p.m. Sunday as well! 

For Alums interested in participating at UREC or University Park during other times in the year, UREC offers Alumni Day Passes available through the JMU Alumni Association. 

For Alumni interested in participating on a regular basis during a period of time such as a month, semester, or year, Alumni Memberships for established JMU alumni are available to utilize UREC and UPARK facilities (during specific hours only) for a fee. 

Alumni Access Hours: Fall and Spring Semesters

  • Mondays-Thursdays: 6 a.m. - 2 p.m., 9-11:30 p.m. (Ages 16+)
  • Fridays: 6 a.m. - 2 p.m. (Ages 16+)
  • Fridays: 6-10 p.m. (Family Hours)
  • Saturdays: 9 a.m. - 10 p.m. (Family Hours)
  • Sundays: 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. (Family Hours)
  • Sundays: 9-11:30 p.m. (Ages 16+)

All operating hours during Fall Break, Winter Break, Spring Break and Summer Break are Alumni and Family Hours.

Alumni Memberships do not include programs requiring registration or Athletic Training Services. An alumni member may purchase guest passes. Family members for alumni members are considered guests - there is not free family access included in this membership. Learn about pricing and age restrictions for guest passes!

Spouse, Dependent and Guest Options for Alumni

Alumni may purchase add-on memberships for their spouse and/or dependents (ages 18-23). During regular operations, Alumni Spouse and Dependent Memberships have access only during Alumni Access Hours and cannot be used for programs requiring registration or Athletic Training Services. Alumni Spouse and Dependent Members do not need to be accompanied by the Alumni Access Card holder.

Dependent Memberships cannot be purchased without the purchase of an Individual Membership and must be done at the beginning of a contract.

Alumni Memberships and Renewals

Apply for an Alumni Membership

Alumni will be verified based on the records kept by the Office of Alumni Relations.

Alumni who submit an online application cannot access UREC until they receive their confirmation email. Single day passes are available through the JMU Alumni Association for $7 until the membership is processed. 

Alumni members purchasing a membership through UREC will be provided a username and password for UREC Register for the options to renew their membership, purchase towel service, purchase guest passes, and reserve racquetball courts.

JMU Summer Conferences

If you are attending a summer camp or conference at JMU, you may purchase a single day Conference Guest Pass for $10 (only during your visit on campus for a camp or conference). This is available for ages 18 and above.

Exact cash payment and conference credentials (conference ID card or equivalent) are required.

Once in the facility, you may participate in any area except for programs requiring registration and Athletic Training Services.

Entry Cards and Courtesy Visits

Only authorized users, guests of authorized users, and approved groups are allowed entry. Authorized users must have their valid JAC, UREC App barcode, URAC, or Alumni Access Card to enter and exit UREC and University Park. All participants must exit through the Welcome Center or Gatehouse turnstiles.

If you do not have your card, you may enter two times per semester by using a courtesy visit. To use your courtesy visit, you MUST know your PeopleSoft number. Due to safety and security issues, we will not make exceptions to this policy. False representation of identification will result in immediate confiscation of provided identification.

URAC and Alumni Access Cards are only granted after applications are submitted, approved, and if required, paid for. See information above for applications.

URAC cards will be able to hold FLEX money for use in UREC and on campus. At the end of the spouse, dependent or alumni membership, if not renewed, any unused funds will either be transferred to the host employee card (spouse/dependent), refunded to the URAC card holder, if over 25.00 or forfeited if under 25.00. Funds under 25.00 can be transferred to a DART card if requested before the expiration date. DART card must be purchased by URAC holder and presented at Card Services office in SSC. To receive your refund or transfer of funds, you must contact Card Services.

Refund Policy and Questions

If you are purchasing a membership, locker rental, or towel service, take care to only purchase the length of membership that you are certain you will use. Refunds will not be granted for these purchases, even due to separation with the University.
