How do I make Office 2000/XP/2003 formats compatible with Office 2007?

From an Older Format to a 2007 Format

Microsoft offers the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats, which enables Microsoft Office 2000, Office XP, or Office 2003, users to able open, edit, and save files using the file formats new to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007.

When I save in Office 2003 using the Compatibility Pack, will I lose Office 2007 features?

Not if you save in XML format. However, you cannot take advantage of features unique to Office 2007 in Office 2003, but you can retain them using the Compatibility Pack.

How do I save in another format or set another format as default?

Saving in Another Format

Click on the Office button on the ribbon in the upper left-hand corner and then choose Save As. From there you can select the format you want.

To save in a PDF or XPS format, please visit 2007 Microsoft Office Add-in: Microsoft Save as PDF or XPS.

Setting a Format as the Default Format

 

  1. Open your Office application (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
  2. Click on the Office button on the ribbon in the upper left-hand corner.
  3. Select Options (Word Options, PowerPoint Options, or Excel Options depending on the application). (Word Picture, PowerPoint Picture, Excel Picture)
  4. Click Save on the left-hand menu. (Word Picture, PowerPoint Picture, Excel Picture)
  5. On the pane on the right-hand side, use the drop-down menu beside Save files in this format: to select the default format.
  6. Click OK.

What issues are there in regards to reading Office 2007 Excel files (.xlsx) in Office 2004 Excel (for Mac)?

Compatibility for Office 2004 Excel does not work if someone sends you an Office 2007 Excel file (.xlsx format). If you save the Excel file in Office 2007 in a "lower" format (97-2003 .xls format), it will work. To save in a "lower" format, refer to How do I make Office 2000/XP/2003 formats compatible with Office 2007?

Outlook 2007: How should I respond to the message "Mailbox is over quota?"
(IMAP Configuration)

If you have already emptied your trash and deleted any messages that are large or have large attachments, then follow the instructions below:


  1. When you see the error message "Your IMAP server wants to alert you to the following: Mailbox is over quota," click OK (You may see it multiple times). (Picture)
  2. Select your Inbox under your IMAP folder (it may show up as your e-ID or as imap.jmu.edu). (Picture)
  3. Click to Tools, then IMAP Folders. A dialog box with tabs will appear. (Picture)
  4. Click the Subscribe tab. Click the Query button. A list of folders will appear. (Picture)
  5. Find the entry for deletedmessages.user.youreid (where youreid is your e-ID, such as doggdx if your name is Duke Dogg) and then click the Unsubscribe button. Then click OK. (Picture)
