If you wish to make a complaint / commendation about the actions of police personnel or about any aspect of police department operations, please:

  • Come to the James Madison University Police Department and tell any person with the department that you wish to make a complaint / commendation, or
  • Call the James Madison University Police Department and tell the person answering the phone that you wish to make a complaint / commendation, or
  • Write your complaint / commendation and mail it to the Chief of Police.

A supervisor of the police department will assist you in filling out a report of incident involving personnel.  This report will ask you to identify yourself and then to give specific details about the incident.

Your complaint will be investigated.  You may be contacted and asked additional questions about your complaint.

If it's going to take a long time to investigate your complaint, you will be notified of the approximate time when you may expect a reply.

When your complaint has been investigated, the Chief of Police will review the investigation and will notify you explaining what has been found out about the matter.
