Independent Scholars at the 2016 Southern Regional Honors Conference

Become an Independent Scholar

The Independent Scholars major is open to all JMU students with a GPA of 3.25, or by permission. Interested students should meet with Independent Scholars faculty to discuss their academic goals and enroll in the introductory course (IND 200), in which they will develop an area of inquiry and design their curriculum. Acceptance into the major is determined by a faculty committee at the end of each IND 200 course.

Successful applicants will have a strong academic record that demonstrates exceptional motivation, curiosity, writing ability and independent research potential, and will have submitted a convincing inquiry proposal and a feasible curriculum in the IND 200 course, which contains both depth and breadth, provides grounding in research methods, and integrates the theoretical perspectives and methodologies of contributing disciplines.
