The research participation requirement is worth 3 credits (typically that means three studies, although some studies may vary slightly in their 'value'). If students are enrolled in both PSYC 101 and 160, they will need to earn 6 points total.

If you wish, you may replace 1, 2, or all 3 credits with alternative activities. In other words, complete the following assignment up to three times to earn these credits instead of participating in research. Remember, Alternate Activities are optional and you should only complete the Alternate Activities if you are not willing or able to complete available studies.

Your first Alternate Activity will become available through Sona, the JMU Psychology Research Participation website, by the third week of the semester. There will be 3 Alternate Activities posted for both PSYC 101 and PSYC 160 over the course of the semester. Alternate Activities have staggered due dates. In Fall semesters, Activity 1 is due the first Friday in October, Activity 2 is due the first Friday in November, and Activity 3 is due on the last day the pool is open. In Spring semesters, Activity 1 is due the third Friday in February, Activity 2 is due the Friday before Spring Break, and Activity 3 is due on the last day the pool is open.

To complete this assignment you will:

  1. Log into Sona with the username and password you were emailed
  2. Find the appropriate alternative activity (e.g., PSYC 101 Alternate Activity 1)
  3. Read the article linked in the Alternate Activity description.
  4. Sign up for the Alternate Activity timeslot and complete the survey.

To receive one unit of credit, read one article and then pass the quiz that corresponds to that article. Sona automatically awards credit once the survey is submitted. However, all surveys are reviewed within 10 days of submission; credit may be removed or remain pending the review of survey responses.
