The College of Health and Behavioral Studies at James Madison University has a long-standing commitment to preparing future professionals for collaborative, interprofessional and interdisciplinary practice in varied settings. Each year, in recognition of superlative achievement and contribution in interprofessional education (IPE) and interdisciplinary education (IDE) and/or practice, the College of Health and Behavioral Studies identifies one faculty member or a faculty team within the college as the recipient of the Distinguished IPE and IDE Award.

Minimal Criteria:

Individual faculty nominee must

  • Currently hold full-time (non-retired or non-emeritus) status.
  • Receive endorsement of AUH

Faculty team nominee must

  • Include collaboration between full-time faculty representing two or more different professions or disciplines within CHBS.  
  • Receive an endorsement from the relevant AUH for each full-time faculty who is a member of the team.
  • Include at least two faculty members with different professional/disciplinary backgrounds and from CHBS; collaborators from other Colleges, part-time faculty, staff, or practitioners from the community may be involved in the collaboration as well 
  • Preferably, involve faculty from multiple CHBS units.

Additional Criteria:

Individual nominee

The nominee must have demonstrated excellence and/or innovation in IPE and/or IDE across their teaching, scholarly activity, and/or service (integration of IPE/IDE work across multiple domains is encouraged).

This may include, but is not limited to:

  • Developing and/or implementing 
    • IPE and/or IDE learning experiences to enhance collaborative student learning
    • IPE and/or IDE partnerships across JMU and/or within the larger community
    • workflows or processes to facilitate a team-based approach
    • student, staff, or faculty training/mentorship programs that enhance IPE and/or IDE
    • organizational and/or institutional structures to support IPE and/or IDE development, implementation, and collaboration 
    • evidence-based practices in the conceptualization and evaluation of IPE and/or IDE
  • Leading the creation and dissemination of IPE and/or IDE research and/or scholarship, grounded in relevant literature
  • Leading teams in the development, implementation, and/or assessment of IPE and/or IDE activities
  • The candidate is seen as a model for faculty and students

Faculty team nominee

The team must have demonstrated excellence and/or innovation in IPE and/or IDE across their teaching, scholarly activity, and/or service (integration of IPE/IDE work across multiple domains is encouraged).

Individual faculty nominee’s submissions, completed by a peer, AUH, or AUPAC:

  • Current Curriculum Vitae
  • Nominated faculty’s narrative describing their IPE or IDE project(s) and efforts (maximum 1,000 words). 
  • Nomination letter from a peer, AUH or AUPAC (if letter is provided by a peer, AUH needs to complete an endorsement form).
  • One additional letter of support from a collaborative partner, student, or someone who can speak to the impact of the nominee’s contributions 

Faculty Team nominee’s submissions, completed by a peer, AUH, or AUPAC:

  • Current Curriculum Vitae for each team member.
    Nominated faculty team’s narrative describing their IPE or IDE project(s) and efforts (maximum 1,000 words). The faculty team narrative must clearly articulate the critical role of each collaborator to the success of the project.
  • Endorsement form from the AUH for each faculty member. 
  • One additional letter of support from someone who can speak to the impact of the team’s contributions 

Nominations

Documents submitted through nomination form will be forwarded to the chair of the IPE and IDE Council. The due date for all documents is Friday, November 24, 2025 at 5:00 p.m. (ET).

The selection committee includes five members of the IPE and IDE Council. The IPE and IDE Council includes faculty members from all academic departments in the CHBS. In the event a candidate is on the IPE and IDE Council, he or she will be recused from evaluating the teaching award nominees.

Nominations should be submitted by the peer, AUH, or the AUPAC chair (or his/her designee). All required information should be gathered before the online submission process begins. Please have the following documents ready to submit to the web page:

Individual Faculty Member:

  • Current Curriculum Vitae
  • Nomination letter from a peer, AUH, or AUPAC (if peer nomination, also required is endorsement form from the AUH).
  • One additional letter of support from a collaborative partner, student, or someone who can speak to the impact of the nominee’s contributions 
  • Candidate’s personal narrative describing their IPE or IDE project(s) and efforts 

Faculty Team:

  • Current Curriculum Vitae for each team member.
  • Nomination letter from a peer, AUH, or AUPAC 
  • Endorsement form from the AUH for each faculty member.
  • One additional letter of support from someone who can speak to the impact of the team’s contributions 
  • Faculty team’s narrative describing their IPE or IDE project(s) and efforts which clearly articulates the critical role of each collaborator to the success of the project.

To ensure the completeness of your application, please include the nominee's individual or team name in the file name of all application materials to be attached.

Award

The recipient of the College’s Distinguished IPE and IDE Award will receive a $1,500 honorarium if an individual award recipient or $3,000 if a team award and will be recognized at a University event and a College meeting.
