Welcome to Philosophy and Religion at JMU!
Our faculty and students engage critically with ideas and values that shape human life across the globe. We offer both a major in Philosophy and a major in Global Religions and Cultures, in addition to minors in Philosophy, Ethics, Logic and Reasoning, Global Religions and Cultures, and Christian Studies. We also offer many courses in the university's general education program, including Introduction to Philosophy; Critical Thinking; Ethical Reasoning; Religions of the World; and Religion, Spirituality and the Meaning of Life.
Our courses prepare students to engage with diverse worldviews and navigate the ideological complexities of our ever-changing human community. Many of our courses focus on historically important figures, texts, and traditions, while others examine contemporary developments in philosophy and religion. Our alumni pursue a wide variety of careers in fields such as law, business, education, goverment consulting, intelligence analysis, international development, and journalism.
Our faculty are not only teachers but also scholars who regularly publish books, anthologies, journals, articles, encyclopedia entries, and pieces in the popular press. Our new Faculty Bookshelf showcases an array of original scholarly monographs, edited volumes, textbooks, translations, and critical editions of classic works published by our faculty.
