New freshmen and transfer students declare their majors through the JMU One Book website when they sign up for orientation. This major becomes the students' official major of record unless they change the major at some point in the future. All adviser assignments are based upon a student's declared major.
If a student wishes to change a major, the student must complete a Change or Declaration of Major form available from Registration Services located on the third floor of Warren Hall. The department head of the new major must sign the form and it must be submitted to the Office of the Registrar on the 5th floor of Warren Hall.
See our Major Snapshots for a list of our majors.
Academic majors will not be officially changed without the completion and submission of the change of major form to the Registrar's office. This is important as many academic programs restrict the initial pre-registration into major courses to declared majors only.
Declaring a Minor or Pre-Professional Program
If a student wishes to declare a minor or a pre-professional program, the student must complete a Change or Declaration of Major form available from the Office of the Registrar. The department head, minor program coordinator or pre-professional program coordinator must sign the form. Once signatures are obtained, the form should be submitted to the Office of the Registrar on the 5th floor of Warren Hall.
Go to class. Regular class attendance is essential.
Maintain grades. The GPA is important for full admission to the major and for continued academic progress. Students should visit professors during office hours if they have questions about class content.
Talk to academic advisers. Meet with academic advisers well in advance of pre-registration to re-assess academic plans and review graduation requirements.
