Angela Russell (’85)

By day, Angela serves as a Family Team Meeting (FTM) Unit Supervisor with the DC Child and Family Services Agency.  A FTM is a structured planning and decision-making meeting that uses skilled facilitators to engage families, family supports, and professional partners in creating a plan for children’s safety, well-being and in laying the groundwork for permanency.  Angela is also a Licensed Psychotherapist, Certified Life Coach and Retreat Leader, specializing in individual, group, couples, and family therapy. She maintains a private practice (In Search Of Peace) in Largo, Maryland. With over 14 years of experience she is currently a private practitioner with a broad spectrum of clients. Among her areas of expertise are Anxiety, Depression, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Impaired Relationships.

For as long as she can remember, Angela has been a strong proponent of work/life balance. Living in the Washington Metropolitan area, Angela witnesses on a regular basis how “workaholics” have such busy schedules that they have little to no time for rest and relaxation. For that reason, she created “Unplug with Angela” where she encourages wo(men) to give themselves permission to slow down from the busyness of life for quiet reflection and to focus on what life is revealing  to them. Angela incorporates her love for travel by offering retreats in exotic international locations in addition to locations within/nearby Washington, DC area. From religious leaders to executives, she leads confidential, intimate retreats covering topics such as self-care, personal growth, heart healing, relationships and self-awareness. Her retreats are customized ranging from half day to multi-day; 1:1, couples and groups.

Angela earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Living Sciences from James Madison University and a Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology from Bowie State University.  She is a charter member of the Ole School JMU Alumni Scholarship Committee established in 2004. This scholarship group is a non-profit organization dedicated to aiding African American students to successfully continue their education at JMU.   Angela is a life member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, serving local and national communities for 34 years.
