The James Madison University Board of Visitors met Friday, September 25, 2009, in the Board Room of Madison’s Festival Conference and Student Center.

Following is a summary of actions taken by the board and key areas of discussion at the board meeting:

  • Approved the June 15, 2009 BOV meeting minutes;
  • Heard and approved committee reports from Athletics, Audit, Development, Education & Student Life, and Finance & Physical Development;
  • Heard a presentation from Dr. Christie-Joy Brodrick Hartman on the Institute for Stewardship of the Natural World;
  • Received a planning process overview presented by Dr. Mark Warner, Senior Vice President for Student Affairs and University Planning;
  • Received an H1N1 update from Mrs. Donna Harper, Executive Assistant to the President;
  • Approved the 2009-2010 revised budget.

Was told by President Linwood H. Rose:

Accomplishments of 2008-2009

  • that Level II restructuring authority by the Commonwealth was approved;
  • that the University Master Plan was approved;
  • that the Engineering Program was initiated;
  • that the dual master’s degree in Environmental Resource Management with the University of Malta was initiated;
  • that the doctorate degrees in Strategic Leadership and Nursing Practice were approved;
  • that the School of Hospitality, Sport and Recreation Management was approved;
  • that the Institute for Stewardship of the Natural World was created;
  • that the University reviewed 24,111 admissions applications including a 17 percent increase over the previous year in African-American and Hispanic applications;
  • that the University’s greenhouse gas inventory was completed;
  • that the following capital projects were completed: East Campus Library, East Campus Dining Hall, Shenandoah Residence Hall and Recreational Fields;
  • that construction began on the Forbes Center for the Performing Arts and the Baseball and Softball Complex;
  • that the following capital projects were planned: Biosciences Building, North Campus renovations, Duke Hall addition and renovation, Port Republic Athletic and Recreation Park, Bridgeforth Stadium Expansion and the Boiler Plant renovation;
  • that rankings and recognitions included: U.S. News and World Report, Princeton Review, Forbes, Business Week and Kiplinger’s;
  • that NCAA post-season play in football, field hockey, women’s soccer, softball, two student athletes in track/cross country and two in diving was achieved;
  • that the first graduate commencement ceremony was held;
  • that James Madison Innovations, Inc. was formed to manage intellectual property;
  • that the University was invited to join the Chesapeake Crescent Initiative.
