Dr. Lisa Winn Bryan (’90 and ‘93M) has dedicated her career to higher education administration at colleges and universities across the Commonwealth of Virginia. She has over 25 years of experience as a student affairs professional.  Lisa also earned her Doctor of Education and Bachelor of Arts from Virginia Commonwealth University.

She is an assistant professor in the African American Studies department at VCU and focuses on Community Outreach for Preservation Virginia and the Voices Remembered Initiative.

Winn Bryan is a strong proponent of women’s colleges, HBCUs and access to higher education for all. She recognizes the direct impact that historic spaces have on the Black community, the Black church and Black culture. She teaches courses on Race & Racism in the US and Introduction to Africana Studies.

Other areas of research and interest include historic preservation, community engagement, genealogy, and African American history, particularly the history of the enslaved and the civil rights movement, with a focus on Virginia. Her primary scholarly objective is to examine the systemic barriers that affect communities of color in America and to strengthen understanding of those challenges.
