The Office of Equal Opportunity administers JMU’s commitment to promoting equal opportunity, compliance and adherence to relevant federal and state laws for the entire JMU community. JMU prescribes to a strict policy that prohibits discrimination of any kind in JMU’s employment practices, admissions, academics or university-sponsored programs and does not tolerate retaliation in any form.

The responsibility for overall coordination, monitoring and information dissemination about JMU’s program of equal opportunity, non-discrimination, and affirmative action is assigned to the Office of Equal Opportunity. The OEO also monitors JMU’s compliance with federal and state laws.

Any university community member who believes they have been subjected to discrimination due to age, color, disability, gender identity, genetic information, national origin, parental status, political affiliation, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation or veteran status may file a complaint with the OEO. Our office investigates complaints of discrimination, harassment, retaliation and provides preliminary findings.

Harassment on the basis of a person's sex, sexual orientation, gender or gender identity is considered sexual harassment. The Title IX Office investigates all complaints of sexual harassment and sexual misconduct. Please refer to the Title IX webpage for more information on sexual harassment and sexual misconduct policies and procedures, and Title IX Coordinator contact information.
