Roger Soenksen, a long-time professor in the School of Media Arts and Design, and Lina Akopov, an administrative assistant in the College of Visual and Performing Arts, were recognized as “Game Changers” on Saturday during the JMU Homecoming football game against Old Dominion.

JMU Athletics created the “Game Changer” award to honor faculty and staff for their outstanding work benefiting the university and Athletics.

During his 50-year career, Soenksen helped form SMAD and taught thousands of students about media law and the First Amendment while also earning the Faculty Mentor Award, said nominator Traci Zimmerman, dean of the College of Arts and Letters

Zimmerman said Soenksen “has selflessly served at all levels, including being JMU’s faculty athletic representative for 20 years.”

Soenksen has been a member of search teams for the JMU president, athletic director, football and basketball coaches. He is an academic triple crown winner, Zimmerman said, earning awards for his teaching, service and scholarship within the College of Arts and Letters.

Akopov was recognized for “being a truly exceptional professional whose impact resonates across every facet of our organization,” said her nominator, Rubén Graciani, dean of the College of Visual and Performing Arts.

Graciani said Akopov’s “sharp intellect, forward-thinking mindset and innovative spirit consistently elevate our administrative processes. She not only anticipates challenges before they arise but also implements smart, lasting solutions that streamline operations and enhance efficiency. Ms. Akopov doesn’t just keep things running—she propels us forward.”

JMU Athletics recognizes “Game Changer” honorees at home football games throughout the season. “Game Changers” will also be recognized on the following dates:

  • Nov. 15 vs. Appalachian State: College of Health and Behavioral Studies
  • Nov. 22 vs. Washington State: College of Business and College of Education
