Computer science professor honored for innovative teaching

Computer science professor Chris Mayfield, a nationally recognized expert on guided inquiry learning, was recognized as a “Game Changer” on Saturday during the JMU football game against Georgia Southern.
JMU Athletics created the “Game Changer” award to honor faculty for their outstanding work benefiting the university and JMU Athletics.
Mayfield was nominated by Jeffery Tang, interim dean of the College of Integrated Science and Engineering. In his nomination, Tang stated, "Dr. Mayfield is a nationally recognized expert in POGIL (Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning), a collaborative teaching method that helps students learn through teamwork and reflection. He uses this approach in his introductory computer science courses, which student-athletes take to complement their studies and develop technical skills. By offering flexible deadlines, remote office hours and individualized encouragement, Dr. Mayfield helps athletes balance the challenges of competition and academics, affirming that they can excel both in the classroom and on the field. "
JMU Athletics recognizes “Game Changer” honorees at home football games throughout the season. “Game Changers” will also be recognized on the following dates:
- Oct. 11 vs. Louisiana: College of Science and Mathematics
- Oct. 18 vs. ODU: College of Arts and Letters and College of Visual and Performing Arts
- Nov.15 vs. App State: College of Health and Behavioral Studies
- Nov. 22 vs. Washington State: College of Business and College of Education
University Studies professor Phil Frana was recognized as a “Game Changer” at the first home game of the season on Aug. 30.
