University Studies professor named first ‘Game Changer’ of 2025

University Studies professor Phil Frana was recognized as a “Game Changer” on Saturday during the season-opening JMU football game against Weber State for his outstanding work benefiting the university and JMU Athletics.   

Frana was nominated by Fletcher Linder, dean of University Studies and associate provost. In his nomination of Frana, Linder wrote, "Professor Phil Frana works closely with JMU student-athletes in the general studies and independent scholars programs, guiding them to balance the demands of their sport with the pursuit of a degree. He helps athletes design flexible academic paths that fit their academic goals, career aspirations and training and competition schedules."  

JMU Athletics plans to recognize “Game Changer” honorees from each of the university’s colleges at home football games throughout the season. “Game Changers” will also be recognized on the following dates:  

  • Sept. 27 vs. Georgia Southern: College of Integrated Science and Engineering 
  • Oct. 11 vs. Louisiana: College of Science and Mathematics 
  • Oct. 18 vs. ODU: College of Arts and Letters and College of Visual and Performing Arts 
  • Nov.15 vs. App State: College of Health and Behavioral Studies 
  • Nov. 22 vs. Washington State: College of Business and College of Education
