General Studies Major

Explore. Connect. Succeed. Discover General Studies at JMU.

Are you curious about everything? Do you see connections where others see separate subjects? The General Studies program at James Madison University is designed for you.

Our interdisciplinary major provides flexible options for students who have explored — but not completed — other majors. It offers an opportunity to build on previous coursework and experiences and earn a degree without starting fresh. In today's competitive job market, employers seek adaptable, critical thinkers with strong skills. With us, you don't just finish; you flourish while building your future.

In General Studies, we offer:

  • Freedom to explore, knowledge to adapt, and skills to succeed in a changing world.
  • Flexibility to craft a personalized degree path that fits your interests and career aspirations.
  • Opportunities to apply your completed courses and select additional ones that fulfill learning objectives and broaden horizons.
  • Support for development of essential skills in critical thinking, adaptability, communication, and problem-solving.
  • Guidance to connect your learning to career paths, further education, and lifelong success.

Recent research shows the value of broad, integrative learning. As Ashley Bear and David Skorton argue in The World Needs Students With Interdisciplinary Education, employers increasingly seek graduates who can connect ideas across fields. David Epstein's bestselling book Range makes the same case: generalists who explore widely and adapt quickly will thrive even in a specialized world.

The General Studies major is available to students who have earned at least 75 credits. To learn more, review the current requirements for the BA degree and BS degree in General Studies. Students should contact IdLS director Scott Paulson (paulsosa@jmu.edu) or visit Gabbin Hall 118 to discuss their academic goals and enroll in an introductory course.
