An Exploration of Brass Pedagogical Practices in Beginning Band

Master of Music in Music Education

Beginning band directors are faced with the task of teaching beginning brass playing whether they are brass players themselves or not. For a new director who is not a brass player, this can be a daunting task, especially when planning sequencing. In this research, I will explore various ways in which successful band directors teach beginning brass in the early weeks of class. In an interview format, I will investigate what the successful director’s strategies and priorities are while introducing young brass players to their instruments. Once examined, data will be coded and analyzed for commonalities of and differences between teachers' pedagogical practices. I will analyze which learning objectives are prioritized and if there are any patterns between the practices of the participants. My goal is to explore a variety of pedagogical methods and provide examples of successful ways of sequencing in the beginning brass setting.
