Location: Wine-Price Building
Description: Want to make a real difference in students’ lives? Join us for this workshop on how to better support students whose basic needs—like food, housing, and financial stability—aren’t being met. You’ll gain insight into the latest data on student insecurity, discover practical strategies to support student success, and walk away with tools you can use right away.
We’ll explore how to navigate the SNAP application process, introduce you to the Student Support Hub, and share a comprehensive list of on- and off-campus resources available to help students thrive. Whether you work directly with students or want to be a stronger advocate, this session is for you.
Learning Objectives:
- Attendees will be able to explain what food insecurity and housing insecurity look like for a college student, with specific data on the JMU population.
- Attendees will be able to identify different resources on campus to support students experiencing food or housing insecurity.
- Attendees will be able to identify different community partners and community-based resources in the Harrisonburg-Rockingham area that students are able to utilize to meet their basic needs, including SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) and SNAP qualifications for students.
- Attendees will be able to share ways they can directly support basic needs efforts through advocacy, philanthropy, and volunteerism.
Facilitated by: Zora Hancock; AmeriCorps VISTA, Off-Campus Life and other members of the Basic Needs Advisory Board
