This program is designed to enable current JMU students to increase their knowledge and understanding of individuals with a disability on the autism spectrum, including those with Asperger syndrome, and to engage in the practice of assessing, planning and implementing programming for this population. The content of this program is suitable for those working with this population anytime along the entire lifespan.  Coursework includes:

  • Early childhood characteristics,
  • Issues and programming,
  • Initial evaluation,
  • Transition,
  • Adult needs,
  • Programming and life planning,
  • Learning,
  • Communication,
  • Behavioral issues,
  • Sensory motor components,
  • Related service needs,
  • Related and co-morbid medical conditions,
  • Social skills and support, and
  • Peer network development and support

Field experiences provide students with the opportunity to learn and practice skills in working with learners with Autism, and their families, in a variety of educational settings, across a variety of abilities, grade levels and demographics.

Note:  The waitlist feature is used on EXED 416 & 417.  If the course is full please add your name to the waitlist and you will be notified if an override will be issued allowing you to enroll in the course.

Current JMU Students - Not in Licensure Program

INTENDED FOR - current JMU Students enrolled in Non-Special Education Licensure Programs who wish to increase their understanding of this population.

NOTE:  At the completion of all 3 courses a Certificate of Completion will be emailed to your JMU email.   Courses must be taken in consecutive order.  Due to the popularity of these courses there are two sections offered to allow as many students as possible to enroll.  The Instructor requires you keep the same instructor for all three sections.

Practicing Teachers & Non-JMU Students

INTENDED FOR – current JMU students who are going to be the teacher of record for individuals with autism.  General Education teachers can choose whether Undergraduate or Graduate courses better meets their needs.  Work with the advisor to plan a course of study to include the autism series.
