The M.S. in Speech-Language Pathology program (online) accepts students every 2 years. The next application cycle will open on September 15, 2024.

The Online Speech-Language Pathology (M.S.) Program is designed to provide a broad range of academic and practicum experiences necessary for the education of specialists who work with disorders of human communication and swallowing.

The Online MS SLP program at James Madison University provides:

  • High-quality education. We have extensive experience in online learning.  The online program began in 2006 as part of a consortium of graduate programs in Virginia. In 2012, the online program became a sole program of JMU.

  • Reputation and accreditation. The program is accredited by the Council of Academic Programs. Graduates meet requirements for certification in speech-language pathology by the Council for Clinical Certification (CFCC) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and for health professions licensure in speech-language pathology by the state of Virginia.

  • Highly ranked. The program is recognized and among national online programs. Rated the #1 online speech pathology program in 2024 by Forbes Advisor. https://www.forbes.com/advisor/education/healthcare/best-speech-pathology-programs-online/
  • Flexibility. Designed for career changers and non-traditional students, the online format allows flexibility while maintaining rigorous academic standards.
  • Small Cohort. You will be part of a cohort of 25-30 students, offering a supportive learning environment and networking opportunities.
  • Individual Support. JMU faculty and staff provide personal academic advising, clinical placement assistance, technical support, and access to online learning resources.
  • Interaction and Collaboration. Within the online modality, students value opportunities for interaction and collaboration with faculty and peers, through discussion forums, group projects, and virtual office hours.
  • Admissions Process. We offer a transparent and straightforward admissions process, with clear requirements and supportive staff, to attract qualified applicants and ensure a positive application experience.
  • Program Values. The JMU Online MS SLP program is committed to promoting an inclusive environment that is inviting and supportive to all prospective students, current students, alumni, faculty, staff, and the individuals we serve.

All academic coursework is offered online as a cohort model. Students should expect the program to take three years (9 semesters) to complete. Students will enroll in 2-3 courses per semester. Clinical requirements are met in accordance with ASHA Guidelines for Clinical Certification: https://www.asha.org/Certification/2020-SLP-Certification-Standards/

Students admitted to the online program will need to adjust their personal and/or professional schedules to accommodate clinical placements. Full time employment while enrolled in clinical placements may not be possible in all circumstances.
