THE 2008 COMPETITION

 

About the 2008-2009 Contest

Eligibility

  • The contest is open to academic writing produced in JMU classes (formal and informal essays, research papers, reports, etc.) from Spring 2008 through Spring 2009.
  • Students may enter one piece of writing.
  • There are no length restrictions for submissions.

Awards

  • Three divisions: freshman/sophomore-, junior/senior-, and graduate-level writing.
  • Four undergraduate categories: fine arts, humanities, sciences, and social sciences.
  • One graduate category.
  • Up to three awards for each division in each category, with cash prizes for first and second place.
  • An awards ceremony honoring the winners will be held in April 2009.

Deadline for Submission

  • Friday, December 14, 2008 - 3 p.m.

Manuscript Submission

  • Submit a completed entry form along with the assignment sheet (if available) and a hard copy of the essay (please remove the author's name from the essay; the author should be identified only on the entry form). Winning submissions must be available in MS-Word format. Entries without completed submission requirements may not be considered. All entries from GWRIT 103 classes will automatically be submitted to e-Vision as well.
  • Mail hard-copy entries to Dr. Mark Thomas, Writing, Rhetoric, and Technical Communication, MSC 2103, Harrisonburg VA 22807, or place them in the entry box in Harrison Hall 2276C. Submit queries to Dr. Mark Thomas (thomasme@jmu.edu).
  • Winners will be notified in April 2009.

Judging

  • On-campus screening of submissions will involve JMU faculty.
  • Off-campus writing specialists will make final judgments.

Publication

  • The winning selections will be published in an online collection available in May 2009.
