Target Audience: Individuals interested in learning about the basics of finance and budgeting.

Workshop Description: By now you are well aware of the budget issues facing Virginia and much of the impact this will have on JMU. The Governor has approved another round of budget cuts and this has led many people to re-evaluate their financial security. In fact, now more than ever you probably want to have your financial “ducks in a row”. To help you along those lines we are happy to offer you the opportunity to participate in a four part series entitled Basic Finance & Budgeting: Getting Your Financial Ducks in a Row. This workshop is designed to help you understand and evaluate your values and behaviors as they pertain to spending and budgeting; develop an effective personal budget to assist you in meeting your goals; learn methods to debt reduction; understand investing fundamentals; design effective strategies to meet your investment objectives, take appropriate risks, and understand the financial tools available to you both inside and outside JMU.

This Multi-Session workshop will include:

  • Session 1: Values and Behaviors Pertaining to Spending and Budgeting
  • Session 2: Zero-based Budgeting and Debt Reduction
  • Session 3: Savings Part 1 (Goals and basic investing fundamentals)
  • Session 4: Savings Part 2
