Auditions are only required if you are intending to be a
Theatre and Dance Major with a Dance Concentration upon entering JMU. Dance Minors do not audition. Applications to the JMU Admission Office should be submitted before auditioning.
Each candidate should submit DANCE as their major area of interest.
Send the following information prior to your audition to:

Two letters of recommendations addressing your involvement and commitment to dance.

A one-page and typed personal statement about dance.

A resume and a current photograph (black and white or color).

Copies of documents showing your GPA and class rank.
Please email the School Office (theatredance@jmu.edu) to schedule your audition. Include your email address, cell phone number and the date you wish to audition.
WHAT TO EXPECT ON YOUR AUDITION DAY!
The auditions are held in the Estes Center (EC) of the Forbes Center for the Performing Arts, located at the corner of Main Street and Warsaw Avenue. Please park in the Warsaw Avenue Parking Deck which is located behind The Forbes Center. As you enter The Forbes Center, please check in at our reception desk which will be located in The Interlude Lobby located by the Forbes Center Box Office.

TOURS OF THE FORBES CENTER AND THE WAYLAND RESIDENCE HALL, THE ARTS LIVING - LEARNING COMMUNITY, WILL BE SCHEDULED THROUGHOUT EACH AUDITION DAY
The Audition Class will consist of:
- A ballet barre in ballet shoes
- Contemporary modern center and across-the-floor combinations in bare feet
- A directed improvisation
The auditions are held during JMU Dance Program Concert weekends. Prospective students are invited to attend these evening concerts and will be offered complimentary tickets. Please let us know how many tickets you will need before the audition
NOTIFICATION OF ACCEPTANCE
Prospective students who have auditioned will be notified of their acceptance to the Dance Concentration after they have been notified of their acceptance to JMU. Dance Concentrators will be encouraged to demonstrate their commitment to this intense course of study by making it their first-major if they plan to double major.
Students who do not receive acceptance to the Dance Concentration but who do receive admission to JMU can re-audition for the Dance Concentration during their first year during the scheduled prospective student auditions. These students also can contact the Dance Program Coordinator at the beginning of their fall freshman semester to discuss the possibility of adding dance courses to their schedule depending upon availability of classes.
