Zie Rivers Academic
Mentoring Program
The Academic Mentoring Program is
a joint effort between the Centennial Scholars Program (CSP) and
the Center for Multicultural Student Services (CMSS). The program
is an additional retention tool that encourages students to utilize
all academic resources available at JMU. The program is designed to help
students who require assistance principally in the areas of math
and science. The tutor/student ratio will be small, with
approximately six students per class. Initially, we plan to hire ten
tutors to teach MATH 155/156, 205, 220, 231, and
232; CHEM 120 and
131; and GPHIL
120. Writing tutors will not be
hired, since the University Writing Center is
accessible to all students and the FYI Resource & Writing Center is available to all
freshmen. More subjects will be added as the need arises. For
example, if there are a substantial number of students requesting
assistance in JUST 200, a tutor will be hired to fulfill that
need. Students interested in tutoring
must have successfully completed the course they desire to tutor
with a grade of "B" or higher. In addition, tutors must be
available to commit to a minimum of six hours per week.
Applicants will be required to submit an unofficial transcript
along with their application. Students interested in applying
for tutoring positions, as well as students who require tutoring,
should contact Iris-Marie Norvor at
norvoria@jmu.edu or call 540/568-4321. Applications are available online on the Centennial Scholars Program (CSP) and the Center for Multicultural Student Services (CMSS) websites.
