James Madison University wishes to recognize employee contributions that support the overall objectives of JMU and state government. The university has established a recognition program that applies to classified staff, A&P faculty and non-student wage employees to reinforce positive behaviors, enhance good employee relations, raise morale, and improve agency and state government operations.

Types of Awards and Recognition

Monetary recognition award presented to individuals who have contributed to extraordinary customer service at JMU. Criteria for this award could include: initiative in going the extra mile to provide services to internal and external customers with timely and appropriate follow-up, responsiveness to the needs of students and other patrons or customers and demonstrated improvement in customer service and satisfaction. The total monetary awards must not exceed $5,000 per employee per fiscal year for classified and wage employees. Use the Employee Recognition Nomination form to submit this award. A&P Faculty and Instructional Faculty are also eligible for this award. There is no monetary limit and is submitted via the Supplemental Pay ePAR.

In order to increase the degree completion rate among employees and to develop the university’s human capital, the university will provide A&P faculty and classified staff employed full-time at the university with a degree attainment bonus when an employee completes a first associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree. The amount of the degree attainment bonus for completion of a first associate’s, bachelor’s and master’s degree is $2,000. The amount of the degree attainment bonus for completion of a first doctoral degree is $3,000, provided as a one-time lump sum payment. Peer to peer recognition that allows any faculty or staff member to acknowledge behaviors or actions of their peers that exemplify the university or the individual’s departmental Mission, Vision and Values. You can find more information here.

In appropriate cases, retired A&P and Instructional Faculty members may be recognized by the award of emeritus faculty status. Emeritus faculty status is a privilege and not a right, and it is awarded at the discretion of the university. No faculty member is entitled to emeritus status, and emeritus status may be removed by the university at any time for any reason. Policy #2105: Emeritus Faculty provides additional information.

Monetary recognition award that recognizes exceptional performance, completion of a special project or event or other extraordinary accomplishment. The total monetary awards must not exceed $5,000 per employee per fiscal year for all classified and wage employees. Use the Employee Recognition Nomination form to submit this award. A&P Faculty and Instructional Faculty are also eligible for this award. There is no monetary limit and is submitted via the Supplemental Pay ePAR.

Includes unscripted and spontaneous recognition and can be a powerful motivator for employees. Informal recognition is given regularly and can include words of praise, gratitude, encouragement or a handwritten ‘thank you’ note.

Awarded through the President’s Office in support of the Governor’s Award program, Purple Star Awards recognize an employee’s outstanding contributions and achievements that led to the success of the university during the prior year in the areas of agency star, career achievement, community service and volunteerism, customer service, innovation, teamwork and workplace health, wellness and safety.

In appropriate cases, retired staff members may be recognized by the award of emeritus staff status. The university hosts annual recognition events to celebrate and appreciate the dedication of our faculty and staff as they reach milestones in their continued service to JMU.
