Student Research

Research Requirement

All BA (Earth Science) and BS (Geology) students must complete a research project to fulfill degree requirements. Students tyipcally select a research project in a geologic subdiscipline and work under the mentorship of a faculty advisor with expertise in that area. Some students may have the opportunity to work as paid assistants on grant-funded faculty research projects. Research areas and faculty advisors are listed below:

  • Coastal Geology:  Dr. Shelley Whitmeyer
  • Engineering Geology:  Dr. Yonathan Admassu
  • Geochemistry:  Dr. Steve Baedke, Dr. Elizabeth Johnson
  • Geomorphology:  Dr. Scott Eaton
  • Geophysics:  Dr. Justin Brown
  • Geoscience Education:  Dr. Eric Pyle
  • Meteorology:  Dr. Stan Ulanski
  • Mineralogy:  Dr. Lance Kearns, Cindy Kearns
  • Paleoclimatology & Paleoceanography:  Dr. Kristen St. John
  • Paleontology:  Dr. Lynn Fichter, Dr. Steve Leslie
  • Sedimentary Petrology:  Dr. John Haynes
  • Soils:  Dr. Cullen Sherwood
  • Structural Geology, Tectonics, Geospatial Investigations:  Dr. Steven Whitmeyer

Student Research Symposiums

Each year, the Department hosts a Student Research Symposium where students present their research projects. The following symposium abstracts demonstrate of the types of projects students have completed.
