Former U.S. President and Nobel Peace laureate Jimmy Carter and former First Lady Rosalynn         Carter received the 2009 Mahatma Gandhi Global Nonviolence Award on September 21, 2009 at James Madison University.

 

 

 

 

 2007 Mahatma Gandhi Global Nonviolence Award

The inaugural 2007 Mahatma Gandhi Global Nonviolence Award was bestowed upon the Most Reverend Desmond Mpilo Tutu, Anglican archbishop emeritus of Cape Town, South Africa and a 1984 Nobel Peace Prize winner known for his work in ending apartheid, at James Madison University on September 21, 2007, the International Day of Peace.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu received the award in recognition of his exemplary contributions toward the improvement of human relations and to social, economic, and political transformation through the creative application of nonviolent methods.
