Scholarship History:

Established by Major General Joseph and Mrs. Valerie Yakovac in memory of their daughter, Sara.  Sara was born in West Point, New York.  Her family lived at Army postings that included Germany before moving to the Washington, D.C. area in 1998.  She was a member of Alpha Sigma Tau sorority and president of the Economics Club and the Omicron Delta Epsilon economics honor society.  She was a volunteer with the Leukemia Society of America. Sara graduated from JMU in 2000 with a B.S. in economics.  She was a consumer loan researcher with KPMG Peat Marwick in Washington, D.C.  During her senior year at JMU, just after spring break, Sara was diagnosed with leukemia, a cancer of the white blood cells.  Doctors told her she had a 20 percent chance of making it through a bone marrow transplant procedure, but she remained positive.  In March 2001, Sara had the transplant surgery at Ohio State University's medical center.  She died from complications on April 17, 2001 at the age of 22, just a year after her diagnosis.
