JMU Equine Assisted Psychotherapy

The CC and UHC are excited to offer equine assisted psychotherapy based on the Eagala model. The Eagala model utilizes a collaborative approach with team members consisting of:

  • Licensed Mental Health Professional (Dr. Laitem),
  • Equine Specialists (Karla Kale, M.Ed and Phyllis Mathews, DNP, WHNP-BC)
  • And the horses

This team works with clients in a hands-on, experiential process, that helps empower students to find solutions to problems. The CC and UHC are partnering with Rocky Hills Stables, LLC to offer this non-traditional talk therapy to the JMU campus. These services will be offered each semester.
