Increasing Mental Health Resources for Student Success

The American Council on Education recently named the “mental health of students” as the most pressing issue facing college campuses, cutting across all demographics and leaving no part of campus untouched. Your gift to the Counseling Center ensures access to important mental health resources for the 2,000 students who seek services each year, including:

  • Short-term individual counseling  (3 to 5 sessions)
  • Referrals to local professionals for longer-term clinical services
  • Weekly small-group counseling
  • Wilderness therapy programs during spring and fall break
  • Animal assisted therapy and therapy dog outreach
  • Award-winning specialized workshops for issues like anxiety and perfectionism
  • Access to relaxation and creative arts self-care spaces
  • Clinical support, advocacy, consultation and referral services for survivors of sexual trauma
  • Crisis consultation

Our Impact

Using the most popular assessment of college student mental health symptoms, JMU students improved at greater levels than the national average on each of eight clinical subscales. Last year, of the students who were surveyed by the JMU Counseling Center,

  • 99% indicated that their counselor seemed skilled and competent
  • 93% indicated that they were now better prepared to work through future problems in healthy ways
  • 80% agreed that because of counseling, they were more likely to stay in school

"This is truly the most important resource on campus, in my personal opinion. This place has changed my life."
