FAQs

  1. How do I purchase a Lion license for my JMU-Owned computer?

JMU does not own a university-wide license for Lion, however, Information Technology (IT) will purchase upgrades in quantity to make the OS available to departments for the actual cost of $14.99 per copy.

To request a license and a Lion installation, fill out the “Setup and Installation Request for JMU-owned Computers, Printers, and Mobile Devices” form.  After authenticating to the form, choose  option 2 and select “New software on JMU-owned computer.”  IT staff will contact you regarding scheduling the installation and to obtain your department's org code information to recover the cost of the license(s).

*Please note* As with all operating system installations, IT re-images the computer's hard drive before installing the new operating system.  All applications and data are reloaded after imaging is complete. To ensure there are no data issues, we strongly recommend that you back up or copy all of your critical files to the network file storage prior to the scheduled Lion installation appointment.

Known Compatibility Issues and Solutions/Workarounds:

See this external site for a longer list of applications.

  1. No Cisco VPN client

Workaround is to boot Lion in 32 bit mode (press the 3 and 2 keys down when booting) or contact the JMU Computing HelpDesk

  2. Printer drivers - visit your printer manufacturer’s website for updates

  3. Fetch:  Fetch Softworks  has indicated Fetch 5.6 generally works with Lion.  Some issues were found with the Fetch dashboard widget and using the Automator with Fetch, but core functionality is fine.

You can download Fetch for free from the Mac Software Downloads page

  4. VMware Fusion:  VMware Fusion will generally work, with some limitations.  See VMware's site for further information.
