Early teams at the University were basically intramural teams, including basketball teams with intriguing nicknames like the “Tomahawkers.” Intercollegiate competition began in the 1920s and has blossomed today into an extensive program of nationally competitive intercollegiate sports for men and women – one that brought national championships in three sports to campus along with dozens of regional and conference titles. This section looks at the coaches, athletes, fans and supporting cast of JMU's athletic history.
